Integrating AI in language education: Artificial intelligence in Language Education: A Smart Partner or a Formidable Competitor?

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly reshaping language education by introducing adaptive, personalized, and continuously available learning environments. This conceptual paper examines whether AI should be understood as a smart pedagogical partner or a formidable competitor to human educators. Drawing on Second Language Acquisition theories, particularly Krashen’s Input and Affective Filter hypotheses, alongside constructivist perspectives, the paper explores how Intelligent Tutoring Systems, Large Language Models, and conversational AI can provide individualized comprehensible input, reduce foreign language anxiety, and support scaffolded learning. It also considers the pedagogical value of automated feedback, gamification, and adaptive interaction. At the same time, the discussion addresses emerging concerns related to cognitive offloading, algorithmic bias, data privacy, linguistic hegemony, and excessive dependence on automated systems. The paper argues for a human-centered hybrid model in which AI supports routine instructional functions while teachers retain responsibility for cultural interpretation, emotional engagement, critical thinking, and meaningful interpersonal communication.
