From Assistance to Substitution: Generative AI and Undergraduate Research Skills

Abstract

Generative artificial intelligence has become part of the daily academic works for the university students, whether it develops research competence or simply improves the quality and speed of immediate problem solving and response. This integrative literature review examines that question through five related dimensions of undergraduate research competence: information literacy, critical thinking and problem-solving, academic writing, self-regulated learning and research independence, and research ethics. The review synthesizes recent systematic reviews, meta-analyses, empirical studies, and established educational frameworks. However, GenAI looks most useful when it functions as an assistive tool: students use it to possibility generation, feedback receiving, alternatives comparing, or revise their work while retaining responsibility for source evaluation, reasoning, and final decisions. By contrast, substitutive use where the system performs substantial portions of the cognitive or research process creates problems of cognitive offloading, weak source studying, overconfidence, wrong references, and reduced human research independence. The review therefore argues that the central educational issue is not whether the generative artificial intelligence is beneficial or harmful in itself, but under what conditions AI-assisted performance becomes genuine, transferable research competence. Three recurring moderators are especially important: instructional directions, assessment design, and the limit of responsibility respected by the student. The review concludes with a conceptual framework distinguishing assistive from substitutive usage and proposes a research agenda centered on new designs, objective skill assessment, discipline-sensitive studies, and assessments that require students to demonstrate their own reasoning.

Mohammad   Rami   Al   Jundi is   a   Faculty   Member   in Mechanical  Engineering  with  over  10  years  of  professional experience   across  engineering   and   educational   fields.   He currently serves at Al Maaref University for Applied Sciences. He  holds  a  PhD  in  Mechanical   Engineering   (Design  and Production)  and  has  prior  industry   experience   as  a  Steel Recycling   and   Fleet   Manager.   His   expertise   spans   heat treatment, engineering  research, project and HR management, decision-making,  and  team  leadership.  His  current  academic focus is on Mechatronics Engineering.

Bashar Abdulkareem Alali, Dean, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Maaref University of Applied Sciences, Syria

Bashar Abdulkareem Alali holds a PhD in English Language Studies from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). He is currently the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Human Sciences at Maaref University of Applied Sciences, Syria, where he also teaches undergraduate students. In addition, he teaches undergraduate students at Idlib University and postgraduate students at the Higher Institute of Languages, Idlib University. With over a decade of experience in English language teaching, teacher training, translation, and higher education, his academic and professional career spans institutions in Syria and Malaysia. His research interests include applied linguistics, genre analysis, English for Specific Purposes (ESP), English language teaching (ELT), corpus linguistics, tourism discourse, academic writing, and the integration of generative artificial intelligence in language education. He has published in peer-reviewed journals and international conference proceedings on topics related to genre-based discourse analysis, corpus-assisted language research, tourism promotional texts, and AI-assisted learning.

Rama Alothman is an undergraduate student at Maaref University for Applied Sciences, specializing in Management Information Systems. She began her academic journey by studying Business, which provided her with a strong foundation in business principles, management, and organizational concepts. She later transitioned to Management Information Systems, where she developed a growing interest in the intersection of business and technology. Her academic interests include Business, Information Technology, Artificial Intelligence, and Data Analytics. Asmaa Almansour, Undergraduate Student, Maaref University of Applied Sciences, Syria

Asmaa Almansour is an undergraduate student from Aleppo, Syria, currently in her first year at Al-Maaref University of Applied Sciences, where she studies Applied Chemistry. She has a strong interest in chemical research, laboratory analysis, and the practical applications of chemistry. Her academic interests reflect a growing commitment to understanding both the theoretical and experimental dimensions of the field, particularly through laboratory-based learning and applied chemical studies. Esraa AL Zyadi, Undergraduate Student, Maaref University of Applied Sciences, Syria

Esraa Al Zyadi is a Pharmacy student at Maaref University of Applied Sciences, with a strong academic interest in the scientific foundations of pharmaceutical studies. Her areas of interest include drug composition, mechanisms of action, pharmacology, therapeutic applications, and the broader role of pharmacy within healthcare systems. She is particularly interested in both the industrial and clinical dimensions of pharmacy, where scientific knowledge is applied to drug development, quality control, medication safety, and patient care. Her academic ambitions include pursuing Master’s and Doctoral studies to deepen her expertise and strengthen her professional qualifications in the pharmaceutical sciences.
